Ergonomics to Avoid Fatigue

May 3, 2021 By Shanita Banks

Despite its importance, people routinely ignore the benefits of an ergonomic setup for their home and work. It has many complications down the line, with detrimental effects on health and workplace performance over time. It doesn’t take a lot of effort or money to fix these minor issues capable of big consequences overtime. Here are some ways to reduce the fatigue-causing elements of your setup:

Illustration of proper sitting technique.

Maintaining Good Head and Neck Posture

The average person spends a great deal at their desk job sitting for more than 6 hours or so per day. For those that work on a computer, the center of the screen should be around eye level. The neck must remain straight while looking at the display, without having to turn your neck to look around the display. The overall posture has to be relaxed and not cause any sort of fatigue.

The screen shouldn’t be too dim or bright either to ensure no eyesight-related issues take place.

Desk Setup

Set your desk in such a manner that it’s perpendicular to your eyes when they lay flat on it, either supported by your chair’s armrests. You’d benefit from keeping things within arm’s reach without having to reach out of your chair or stretch unnecessarily to grab things.

If you use the phone for work, consider getting a headset so you don’t have to physically hold the phone each time you’re on call. Your legs should have an adequate amount of space in between the table as well as some breathing room for the back of your knees from the base of the chair.

Miscellaneous Tips

Seat yourself comfortably within your chair, with your hips placed against the back of the chair. It will prevent you from slouching, which beats the purpose of any ergonomic setup. Your feet shouldn’t dangle on the floor either, being perfectly planted instead. The closer you are to your desk while maintaining one arm’s distance away from the screens, the better.

At Healing Hands, we suggest ergonomic tips and tricks that ensure you’re taking the best care of your body. If you’re in Augusta and Thomson, GA, our physical therapists are at your service.
